Special Worship Events
The following special worship events take place every year.
Lent
The season of Lent is the 40 days leading up to Holy week and Easter. It is a time when Christians reflect on their spiritual journey with Jesus and identify areas of their life that they would like to transform in preparation for the events of Holy Week. The Church offers lenten studies in a weekly study group throughout this period.
Easter
Easter is a season of forty days, from Easter Sunday through to ascension day when Jesus returned to God our Father in heaven.
Holy Week
We at the Anglican Church of Noosa reenact the Passion of the Christ and His resurrection, throughout Holy Week starting with Palm Sunday. We joyfully welcome Jesus into Jerusalem by gathering on the Noosa River foreshore and celebrate with a palm parade, baptisms and confirmations. On Maundy Thursday we experience the final meal of Jesus (The Jewish passover meal) and a foot washing service to reenact the washing of the disciple’s feet by Jesus. There follows a vigil in the Garden of Gethsemane where people are invited to come and pray in silence with Jesus as he awaits his arrest and trial.
On Good Friday at 7:30am we hold a traditional ‘Veneration of the Cross’ service at St Andrews and a dramatisation ‘Voices from the Cross’ at St Mary’s at 9:00am.
The Easter Day celebrations begin at dawn on the Noosa spit (the mouth of Noosa river) with a service and a breakfast of smoked fish and bread; the same meal that Jesus cooked for his disciples when he appeared to them.
There are two more Easter day celebrations on the same day. The 7:30am service is in a traditional style at St Andrews, and there is a 9:00am contemporary service at St Marys.
Pentecost
This is the day when we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit given to the Church 50 days after resurrection Sunday. Events vary.
St Francis Day
St Francis day is the celebration St Francis of Assisi where we invite the local community to bring their beloved pets and receive a special blessing from the Brothers of St Francis.
Advent
Advent is the 4 week season prior to Christmas when Christians prepare for the coming of Jesus into the world and their personal lives. The four themes for Advent are hope, peace , joy and love.
Christmas
Definition:
Christ-mas – The Mass of Christ (where mass = celebration).
Christmas means the celebration of Christ – the Mass of Christ.
Christmas is a season of 12 days, starting on Christmas day and finishing 12 days later when the Church celebrates Epiphany. Christmas is the day when we celebrate the greatest gift to humanity from God with the birth of Jesus Christ.
Prior to Christmas there is a nativity concert, which includes Old Macdonalds petting farm and the retelling of the first Christmas, followed by carols by candlelight under the Australian stars; a great event for families.
On Christmas Eve at 11:00pm there is a half hour carol service followed by a traditional midnight mass at 11:30pm.
On Christmas day there is a 7:30am traditional service at St Andrews and a 9:00am contemporary service at St Marys.
For Christmas lunch we hold a community feast, serving a hot Christmas meal. The lunch is free of charge and open to everyone in our community who would like to attend a family focussed celebration. There is a visit from Santa with presents for the children.
